It's hard to clear out the clutter. It's also hard to continue to keep life clutter-free even if you do clear it out, because "nature abhors a vacuum". I think different people clutter for different reasons. Often it may be more helpful to think of cluttering as a fear of something, perhaps a fear of losing something. Some clutterers have an irrational fear, and they might be able to overcome or control that fear by recognizing it and making attitudinal or behavioral changes. Of course, sometimes cluttering is a symptom of tiredness and failing to schedule time for cleanup. I agree that it's helpful to remind ourselves of the cost of clutter and to make a rational decision balancing the cost of clutter with the cost of uncluttering.

Thanks again, Susan B. I've been living in a very cluttered space think a mini-version of "Hoarders" for the past 10 - 15 years. I finally got compliant - and on the right - meds, and started cleaning out and donating things. It's like a weight has been lifted off my psyche. I knew why I cluttered - procrastination and an abusive childhood where clutter discouraged attacks - but knowing why was only half the problem. I had to set goals and follow thru on them. I've also starting taking care of my financial clutter and again, it's a weight lifted.

It's easy to clutter in a society that values consumption, but it's very hard to minimize your spending and hoarding. I'm glad I've made improvements in reducing my clutter and encourage others to do so as well. It refreshes the soul. What a beautiful comment Michelle, I am SO happy for you.
