About me: I am a bioanthropologist trained in paleopathology and medical history. My research interest focuses on Medical Humanities with a particular view to the history, modality of trasmission and biological profiles of ancient plague pandemics. I am also trained in paleopatography. Paleopathography represents the pathobiographical description and interpretation of a patient's clinical case derived from literary and iconographical sources and has no chronological limits. Paleopathography indicates the research focus on the paleo-semiotics of ancient diseases aimed at complementing traditional paleopathological investigations.
We lived abroad until I was 7 years old. Located at the roots of the Alps, Turin was inhabited by ancient Celto-Ligurian- Alpine people and has always had a strategic position for autocthonous and alloctonous armies. Turin is surrounded by hills, the highest one peaking at masl; this area was at the bottom of an ancient sea and fossils seashells are still found in the hills which surround my hometown and in the nearby Pre-Alps and Alps.
I am a disabled scientist. I have a rare genetic disease, which plagued my life when I was a teenager and got worse in my twenties and mid- thirties. Nevertheless, as soon as I felt slightly better, I decided that science would have played a key role in my life.

I got trained in physical anthropology and paleopathology. I loved mummies from Ancient Egypt, and, for a long time, I also wanted to be an oncologist. I had an interest both in botany and physical anthropology. I received a five years scholarship from Compagnia di San Paolo. As a graduate student and a postdoc, new techniques of investigation CT scanning and MRI and chemical analysis of mummified remains developed.
I was fascinated by the information. Chemical analyses on lipids, allowed scholars to appreciate the kind of vegetal and animal compounds used as embalming recipes; these compounds significantly slowed or halted the decomposition process. Inner organs and skeletal pathologies were finally visualised without excessive damage to the corpses i. I was absolutely fascinated by these new techniques and I have created my own multidisciplinary research group focused on mummy studies.
During the last three years, I have played an active role in the creation of new field of investigation named paleopathography. Paleopathography,a sub-branch of paleopathology, is located at the intersection among history, literature, visual arts and medicine.
